One of Britain's leading travel insurance companies has warned winter sports enthusiasts thinking about going abroad this winter to make sure and remember their travel insurance.
Sainsbury's Travel Insurance said that the number of claims related to winter sports like skiing or snowboarding, had risen by 25% in the last year. The company warned travellers that an accident on the slopes could well set you back thousands of pounds unless you take out adequate cover.
Research by Sainsbury's found that damage to knee ligaments were the number one cause of insurance claims, making up 30% of all reports.
“When travelling abroad in Europe, you need to make sure you have both your EHIC and travel insurance. However, your EHIC will only provide you with access to the same state-provided healthcare as a resident of the country you are visiting so it should not be solely relied upon.” Said Sam Marrs from the insurer.
“You need travel insurance to pay for any private medical treatment or for example to be airlifted from the slopes or repatriated back home” She added.
