Following attacks that claimed the lives of scores of people, including a Briton, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is warning British travellers to avoid non-essential trips to the troubled region until further notice.
In a statement today the FCO also advised Britons currently in the Indian city to remain indoors, urging those needing medical assistance to make phone calls for help.
Those concerned about the safety of friends or family in Mumbai were also advised to phone the FCO for advice.
The attacks have led to travel disruptions and travellers were further told to contact travel agents to know how their travel plans may have been affected.
In addition the statement called on British nationals to make photocopies of their passport, Indian visa and flight ticket and keep them separate from the originals when travelling.
Given the importance of travel insurance, the advice also urged travellers to take out comprehensive travel and medical cover and check to be sure they are covered for all the activities they intend taking part in while in India.
