Call it a noble act of mercy or an objective act of desperate greed; two Britons have resorted to selling their kidneys to buyers for money to pay off their debts. The potential donors include a mental health nurse and a 43 year old cab driver. The asking price for a single kidney goes up to £60,000; travel and other expenses not included according to an investigation.
Aware of the fact that selling parts of ones body is a criminal offence, punishable by law, the duo are ready to risk all to get back into that limbo of financial stability once more.
The cab driver from Morecambe Lancashire, has put up one of his kidneys on sale on the internet for a price of £25,000. He claims that he needs the money to pay off his mortgages and credit card loans and in order to purchase a new kitchen.
The second seller, who is a 26 year old mental health nurse, wants to donate one of her kidneys to an American badly in need of a kidney transplant. The asking price for her kidney also amounts to £ 25,000.
While one can live life in a perfectly normal way on a single kidney, the risks involved are huge. Statistics prove that the rate of mortality as a result of infection in any major operation of this sort is 1 in every 3000.
