A new scheme by the chief executive of National Australia Bank, Ahmed Fahour to help poor people set up small companies suggests banks should link up with the Federal Government to supply them with low-interest loans.
Kevin Rudd, the Prime Minister made sure Fahour’s "micro-finance" plan made it through, after the NAB boss presented it to the summit's Strengthening Communities group.
Rudd also nabbed the proposal for a national disability insurance scheme that would allow people who had life lasting injuries from accidents to receive benefits.
The parliamentary secretary for disabilities, Bill Shorten, has come up with his own variation on this idea, focusing on particularly those with brain injuries who are not covered particularly well.
"Every year 800 people across Australia suffer acquired brain injury from a variety of causes ranging from car accidents, to diving into shallow water to sporting accidents," Mr Shorten said.
"Sadly you are better off if you get a brain injury from a motor vehicle accident in Victoria than you are from a swimming accident in another state."
