Health Insurance - Poor families to receive health care in India - 02/01/2009

The BJP government in India has now decided to provide health insurance cover and treatment to 36 lack poor families in Indian slums.

Each of the 36 lakh families will get a health insurance policy cover of $s 30,000 per year under the new programme, which will be implemented in six districts in the first step to over 11 lakh families. The remaining 25 lakh families in 12 districts will also be covered in a phased manner.

The government this week stated that the families under the scheme will be entitled to modern health facilities available at government run hospitals.

Chief Minister Raman Singh has also introduced cashless treatment facilities under the programme. Smart cards will be issued to the families who will be covered so they can receive treatment from designated hospitals without making any payment.
