There has been a fall in the number of credit cards offering a reward schemes, according to research from Sainsbury's Credit Cards.
Research from the financial provider stated that the number of credit cards offering reward schemes has reduced by 11 per cent in the last year.
The firm also pointed out that there has also been a change in the types of credit card rewards.
The MBNA Platinum Rewards credit card offers its customers points for when the card is used on food, petrol and going out while the BT credit card offers discounts off BT telephone and broadband bills.
Craig Hunter at Sainsbury's Credit Cards, said: "The recession has made a lot people reassess their finances and it's great to see that people are starting to make the most of the rewards on offer via their credit cards."
He advised that those intending to take out a credit card should shop around to ensure they "get the best bang for their buck."
He concluded: "Those with cards that offer no, or poor rewards should ensure they get the best bang for their buck and shop around to make sure any reward scheme they sign up to suits their lifestyle and spending habits best."
