New drivers have less experience than other drivers and are therefore more likely to get involved in an accident.
20 per cent of new drivers undergo a car accident within the first 12 months of driving.
Rosemary Thew, of the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) said: "It is a sad fact that one in five deaths on British roads involve newly-qualified drivers. They are certainly one of the most vulnerable groups out on the roads today."
AA President Edmund Kind blamed the increased likeliness of accidents in young drivers on drivers being less experienced with some accidents accounting for the driver’s attitude.
With only eight per cent of young drivers accounting for drivers in London, 18 per cent of road accidents involve young drivers.
As a result, car insurance premiums are higher for younger drivers.
Higher premiums for under 25’s
Younger motorists may find that they’re paying more for their car insurance than other motorists.
A recent study by a car insurance provider, Co-operative Insurance, found that motorists under the age of 25 are seeing their premiums rise faster than the rate of inflation.
Figures found that just last year, younger drivers witnessed their car insurance premiums grow by 11.5 per cent with the rate of inflation increasing by only 3.1 per cent.
The insurance provider stated that the average cost of insurance for under 25’s is £1,463 while those over 25 are paying only three figure sums for their insurance.
Ways to get cheap insurance
According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) however, young drivers could find cheaper car insurance.
A spokesperson for the ETA said: “Certain policies now offer young drivers cheaper premiums if they agree to avoid driving late at night, which is when most of their collisions take place.”
The British Insurance Brokers’ Association (Biba) said young drivers can get cheaper insurance by opting for a smaller vehicle.
Peter Staddon, head of technical services, stated: "If you're learning to driver you don't need a powerful car, you need to understand the road."
Biba said that young drivers of smaller and less powerful cars are less likely to be involved in an accident and opting for a smaller car will enable young drivers to work on their no claims bonus.
Once drivers are confident and experienced, they may find their premiums reduced.
Car modifications are also popular amongst younger drivers. Recently the Association of British Insurers (ABI) warned motorists that car modifications can affect the cost of your insurance premiums.
ABI said that some additions could prove to increase premiums while some, such as modifications to improve security, could reduce the amount spent on car insurance.
