Car Insurance - Insurers advise to check if covered

Motorists have been warned over their usage of satellite navigation systems in their cars, claiming that they may cause more hassle than they are actually worth.

Car drivers have been advised to reduce unnecessary gizmo’s that operate within the vehicle, while driving or risk preparing for an accident.

Website motors.co.uk has found that over 70 per cent of drivers think that they could do without some of the more indulgent aspects of modern entertainment.

Such gadgets include navigation systems, iPods and CD players, all of which can be argued, are possible catalysts to a reduced concentration for any driver.

Distraction

Katie Armitage, marketing manager for motors.co.uk, said: "Many modern vehicles are filled with gadgets and gizmos and for many drivers are seen as not only confusing to use but also a major cause of distraction for both themselves and other drivers."

Drivers who engage in this sort of behaviour could find insurance premiums rise unnecessarily due to the sort of risks that are being undertaken. A driver who is caught risks a £60 fine and at least three penalty points on their license.
Another reason why being up to date on the technology front could be a mistake comes in the form of an increased chance of break in’s and thefts.

Thefts

Satnav’s are now the most popular target for thieves looking to make a quick buck. The police have reiterated their concerns stating that many motorists make life a little too easy for potential criminals by leaving the equipment on display when not in the vehicle or leaving other tale –tale signs of its presence.

A leading figure representing the police advised all to remove any trace of the device at all times to avoid claiming on insurance.

He stated, "It may be an extra hassle but having your window smashed and your satnav stolen will be a lot more hassle to sort out." "They should also remove the sat nav mounting cradle and wipe away any suction marks left on the windscreen or dashboard, as thieves will look out for these,"

This comes on the back of the news that almost £100,000 of satellite systems have been stolen from parked cars in Renfrewshire, further highlighting the problem.

Police in the area have once again advised motorists to be more security minded in order to win the battle against the criminals.
A police spokesman added: "Sometimes thieves smash a window so they can have a look in the glove box or under the seats in the hope there is satnav gear hidden there. In many cases they strike it lucky."
