The number of convictions for driving offences can increase the cost of car insurance premiums, it has been revealed.
According to research by price comparison website, moneysupermarket.com, motorists caught speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol will see their premiums increase by up to 48 per cent.
Those speeding can expect having their premiums rise by five per cent.
However, according to the research, the number of times caught speeding could also increase premiums.
Motorists caught speeding three times would see their car insurance premiums rise by a further 33 per cent.
Those caught drink-driving can expect seeing their car insurance premiums increase by 48 per cent or could even face being refused cover.
Steve Sweeney, head of motor insurance at moneysupermarket.com, said: "The rules of the road are there for a reason, especially when it comes to drink-driving.
It's not surprising that insurers take such a harsh view of those caught driving under the influence."
Recent research from a US car insurance industry found that those in smaller vehicles are more likely to suffer from severe injuries in the event of a road accident compared to those in larger vehicles.
And with more Brits downsizing as a result of the current crisis, the number of road collisions and damages is expected to soar, also bumping up car insurance premiums.
