Stonehenge in Wiltshire has been voted Britain’s most distracting landmark, according to a new study by a car insurance provider.
In a survey of 1,000 motorists, car insurance provider esure found that Stonehenge in Wiltshire was named as Britain’s most distracting landmark, closely followed by Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North and the iconic London Eye.
Hadrian’s Wall, Windsor Castle and the new Wembley Stadium also made the list of famous landmarks that were distracting to motorists.
Market experts say that drivers across the UK could be risking car insurance claims by taking their eyes off the road to look at famous sightings.
The latest survey by the car insurer shows that 12 per cent of motorists have had an accident or near miss after being distracted by a roadside landmark.
More than a quarter of drivers polled said they felt the need to brake suddenly when driving past a landmark and nearly two thirds said other passengers had encouraged them to take their eyes off the road in order to look at a landmark.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure said: “Spotting famous landmarks has long been a fun part of road trips, but this can also lead drivers to distraction as they take their eyes away from the road, slow down or brake suddenly.”
