The heavy snow of last week caused “one of busiest weeks” in a provider’s existence. The countries heaviest snow for 18 years saw a large number claims of needing to be made, from drivers who were affected by the snow.
According to Sainsbury’s Car Insurance 45,000 claims were received by motorists during last week, in relation to accidents caused by the weather. The claims that were made amounted to £63 million and a rise of 45 per cent, in comparison to the year before.
The snow caused havoc on several roads and on motorways and the news of low grit levels could lead to even more danger on UK roads.
Joanne Mallon, Sainsbury's Car Insurance manager, said: "Last week was one of the busiest weeks we can remember for car insurance claims. Drivers in this country aren't particularly familiar with driving in snow and ice and the conditions in many parts of the country were probably the worst many have experienced.
She added: "If more severe weather arrives, we would advise people to only make essential journeys."
