Staff from insurance provider AA watched recent episodes of Coronation Street with fascination after the popular soap featured one of the characters who plays Dev’s girlfriend, Tara, about to commit an insurance fraud.
According to AA staff, Tara planned to insure the car she wanted to give Amber, Dev’s 18-year-old daughter, in her own name but adding Amber as a named driver.
Tara’s action is known as ‘fronting’ and if Amber had an accident the fraud would have been exposed and Tara could end up paying a fortune.
In the soap, Dev’s dilemma on whether to let his daughter have her first car could have ended up in financial disaster if his girlfriend Tara had her way, says AA Car Insurance.
In the latest episodes, Tara offered Amber her bright red VW Beetle and suggested that they could save money on insurance by keeping the policy in Tara’s name. AA adds that Dev’s daughter Amber, as an 18-year-old novice driver, would pay much higher premiums.
AA Insurance Director Simon Douglas said: “What Tara unwittingly suggested is a classic case of 'fronting', where people try to cut premiums by misleading insurers over who is the main driver or giving other false details.”
He added that car insurance insurance providers take fronting very seriously and would investigate in cases where information given is questionable.
