'Buy a new car for your new number plate', drivers advised - 24/01/2008

Drivers should consider buying a new car for the introduction of the new regional number plates, the National Franchised Dealers Association (NFDA) has suggested.
However, the announcement might be met with scepticism from hard-up UK drivers already faced with rising car insurance and fuel costs.
The new plates' first two letters are to correspond to the region in which they are registered - thus, licence plates issued for Londoners begin with LA to LY.
Next, the following pair of numbers are to refer to the period in which the car was bought - and the last three letters are randomly selected. The new system is launched later this year.
Commenting on the number plate reform, Sue Robinson at NFDA said: "The quality of modern cars, the purchasing deals like free car insurance], zero per cent finance available from some manufacturers and very attractive prices all add up to a package to satisfy buyers across the spectrum of customer needs."
She added: "With the first of the years number plate changes soon upon us in March, this could be the time to get into a new car."
