Bike Insurance - Are you riding your bike in the snow?

The recent heavy snowfall over many regions of the UK has made a severe impact to all Brits across the country.

With thousands of schools and businesses closed, and with none of the London busses in operation, what used to be the busy streets of London, has now come to a silent standstill as more Brits are ‘snowed in’.

Forecasters have been advising Brits to ensure they keep an eye on the weather before stepping out during the week.

However, some firms and schools have remained open forcing employees to travel to work regardless of the road conditions.

And as roads become treacherous under the current snowy conditions, with a majority of taxis, busses and tubes being out of service, a large number of those travelling to work have had no option but to make their journey via foot or bike.

Riding in the snow is hazardous

According to a survey currently being conducted by the MCN, so far, 32 per cent of cyclists have admitted to riding their bikes on the snow with figures expected to soar further this week.

Motorcyclists are being advised to ensure they take extra care when driving. By missing one icy patch, the cyclist could be sent off course and may cause a considerable amount of harm to themselves, their vehicle and other road users.

Check your insurance policy before you fall

Those suffering after falling from accident whilst riding their bike without adequate insurance, may find themselves falling further- financially.

Repairing the damages of your vehicle and the vehicle of a third party (if there is one involved), make cost you much more than it would had you had insurance.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued a special insurance advice to motorists who could be affected by the weather.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance and health of ABI warned motorists to ensure they have adequate insurance cover.

He said: "Severe weather conditions cause great disruption and inconvenience, and insurance is there to help soften the blow.”

Motorcyclists should ensure they have comprehensive bike insurance to guarantee their vehicle is covered against a snow related accident.

The effects of the heaviest snowfall in 18 years have lead experts to believe that the number of insurance claims may increase by a great amount.

Bike insurance customers have been advised to take extra care when travelling on their journey as not all roads have been cleared by council gritters.

If the journey is of walking distance, it would be advisable that cyclists and other motorists left their vehicles at home.
