Van drivers in Scotland could find their van insurance policies affected by their illegal use of mobile phones.
Police in Scotland have started a crackdown on drivers using mobile phones on the road in an initiative designed to implement the new laws regarding mobile usage. New legislation was introduced by the Department of Transport in 2007, leaving motorists with three points on their license and a £60 fine if they are caught using a mobile phone while driving.
As well as the financial implications of receiving a fine, drivers may also find their insurance policies are affected as road users who have a history of driving offences will usually pay higher premiums.
After the recent crackdown in Scotland, the Glasgow Evening Times revealed that 205 drivers had been stopped by police in the area. Niven Rennie, the head of road policing and a Strathclyde superintendent, explained that using a mobile phone while driving puts not only your safety but also the safety of others at risk: "This is a worrying trend and we need people to heed the warnings that using a mobile phone when driving is dangerous."
