A majority of vans on British roads are used for business purposes but insurers are now concerned that a significant number of them may not have proper cover.
According to Direct Line for Business van drivers should make sure that they take out adequate cover or they could put their business at risk.
According to the insurer, special business insurance is available on the market specifically targeting vehicles used for business purposes.
The insurance company says that it has studied van ownership and van insurance and found that many van owners are ignorant of the implications of the smoking ban on their work vehicles.
Now van drivers are warned that they could face fines totalling up to £2500. Additionally, the value of their van could be reduced.
According to recent research, vehicles that have been smoked in and have signs of this, such as a lingering smell, burns or nicotine stains, drop in value considerably when they are up for resale.
Kate Syred, Head of Direct Line for Business, said: "Business owners purchasing second hand vans are as demanding as those buying for personal use. Presentation can be key to protecting an asset such as a van."
