Over ten million drivers could have their speeding convictions quashed if a barrister wins his landmark court case, claiming that speed cameras are illegal.
Van insurance customers may be interested to know that barrister Michael Shrimpton has argued that all speed cameras are illegal and that all prosecutions have been made on inadmissible evidence.
Mr Shrimpton presented his argument at a court in Kingston, Surrey as he defended a man who was allegedly caught speeding by a laser device last year.
The barrister argues that the Road Traffic Act says that each new individual type of camera must be approved by Parliament but there are up to 40 types introduced since 1991 that have not been authorised and are therefore illegal.
Mr Shrimpton told the Sunday People newspaper: "It seems around ten million prosecutions including fixed penalty cases have been based on unapproved devices."
