Stress can be reduced by following a healthy diet and embarking on an exercise regime, the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) said today.
A battery of conditions, including headaches, exzema, psoriasis and high blood pressure, can all be triggered by stress.
In extreme cases, potentially fatal conditions such as heart disease - causing a life insurance payout - can be caused by a stressful lifestyle.
Vice-chairperson at ISMA Ann McCracken said that improving nutrition was very important in stress-busting.
She said: "Diet has got to be: eat what you like, just eat less of [the unhealthy things] you think you like and [have] lots of different colours in your food, and make it as fresh as possible - and ideally organic.
"It's the chemicals in food which are energy drains, so processed food is an energy drain."
She added: "Exercise is very much part of what we should be doing, but you can get it from just walking the dog or going up and down the stairs."
According to government statistics, around 420,000 Britons are suffering from work-related stress.
Moreover, a survey performed earlier this year by the Health and Safety Executive, entitled Psychosocial Working Conditions, found that almost 14 per cent of workers found their job either "very" or "extremely" stressful.
