Van Insurance - Highways Agency launches weather alerts - 03/10/2007

British HGV drivers are to receive an early warning system for severe weather conditions, which impede driver visibility and road grip, causing accidents.

Heavy rain and thunderstorm damage can therefore be said to affect the car insurance industry, as well as home insurance claims.

The government's Highways Agency has teamed up with both the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) to develop a special radio-based service.

By using their radios, drivers can receive the warnings and either divert their route or take extra care in their road use - and the service is available now.

Traffic operations director for the Highways Agency Derek Turner said that the group was "very aware how severe weather such as high winds or snow can affect driving conditions".

He added that the radio system had come about thanks to the "close working relationship" which it enjoyed with the FTA and the RHA.
