Travel Insurance - Travel tips for those topping 65

Insurance for the elderly proved to be an untapped market, one that has been left well alone despite the vast numbers of over 65’s tapping into the travelling sector. OAP’s have always had more time and usually more disposable income than their younger, usually more frivolous counterparts.

Cast your mind back to your last vacation and try and recall how many drunken and disorderly elderly couples or groups you saw, chances are the numbers are low if not non-existent. Now recall how many in the age range of 18-30 were wasted and wobbly on their feet, you'll see notice the numbers soar. Why then has the travel insurance sector deemed this demographic are the more desirable?

Possible because they are more likely to overspend when it comes to taking out a policy, purchasing cover that is both unsuitable and unlikely to benefit them in the event of an emergency. Or maybe it is because the elderly are more likely to claim for each eventuality, whereas their younger counterparts are actually more dismissive in the event of a claimable catastrophe.

How many under 35’s are likely to claim for lost or stolen sunglasses despite them selecting a policy that protects them against such an event, the numbers have proven to be incredibly low. The elderly however look to pick up on what they have paid for and so if they happen to misplace their specs, they will be calling up and demanding the details that will outline how to go about getting a new pair within a matter of hours, utilising their ‘sooner rather than later’ approach to life.

So what are the options available to the over 65’s? Companies like ‘Insure For All’ are making it easier for the elderly to obtain the type of information they need to make informed decisions about their travel insurance. Their website offers advice on the types of insurance available and the specifics on what would be covered and what would be excluded.

The exclusions for the elderly would be one of the most potent portions of the policy as it would stipulate whether pre-existing medical conditions would be excluded or whether an extra premium would allow for them to be included.

Pre-existing medical conditions unfortunately are more likely to be present in the elderly, so the peace of mind that comes with knowing that if your eczema is exacerbated by the chlorine in the pool to the point where your personal products aren’t sufficient to soothe the itch; you can always visit the local emergency room and have your skin looked at and hopefully soothed.

In addition to that, they have sectioned their site in an easy access fashion for those less accustomed to using the web utilising quick look links which can give an overlook as to some of the features available on all their cover like £10 million medical cover as standard on all of their European cover. £2 million personal liability cover, a feature too many people underestimate the value of.

Imagine after deciding to let your hair down and while having a little dance you stumble and fall, as you do you reach for the stabilising hand being offered to you by the helpful young man who has noticed your mishap, only as you do you hear a pop and an agonising scream.

That's right in his chivalrous state he has in fact caused damage to himself. The only problem, he hasn’t had the foresight to take out insurance himself and now he has a dislocated shoulder and no means to pay for treatment. Knowing that a simple thank-you won't cover his medical bills, you can be reassured that his kindness and concern won't turn to malice and aggression when he realises his pain will leave him out of pocket.
