Recent figures have revealed that one in 11 backpackers from the United Kingdom, have been a victim of theft, while they have been on holidays abroad, a travel insurance company and financial website has revealed.
More than1.3 million backpackers have been affected by theft and around 409,000, or three per cent; of UK backpackers have said that they have been mugged while they were on holiday abroad. The study also revealed that male backers were more likely to be a victim of theft, than female travellers; with 13 per cent of men and only four per cent of females have claimed to be affected by theft.
Also backpackers, living in Greater London were seen to be most affected by theft, with 14 per cent of victims coming from this area. Eleven per cent were from the North East, Yorkshire & Humberside. Those who were least affected by theft abroad, were from Wales, with only five per cent being accounted for.
A spokesperson for the website, said: “Travelling should be about having fun, but young people have to remember that they are not indestructible. Backpackers can easily end up as victims of crime when they are abroad, and they should always be careful not to put themselves in dangerous situations if they can be avoided.
He added: “We would urge everyone planning on going travelling to be as vigilant as possible and make sure they have comprehensive travel insurance before they depart.”
