A poll by Halifax Travel Insurance has placed the Sydney Opera House at the top of a list of the top ten modern wonders of the world according to British holiday makers.
The Eiffel Tower came in second place while the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro came in at second place.
There were no British landmarks which made the top ten list, however, when questioned as to which British structure was most deserving of a world wonder status, Stonehenge came out on top.
"The top ten modern wonders reflect the diversity of architecture around the world, while the wonders of the British Isles is a reminder of the stunning array of treasures that can be found right here on our doorstep," said Vicky Watson from Halifax.
Others which made the top ten included the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, which is currently the tallest building in the world, the CN tower in Toronto, Canada and the Atomium in Brussels.
Interestingly, the man made Palm Islands in Dubai came forth despite not even being finished yet. The islands have been constructed as a luxury resort in the shape of a palm tree.
Controversially, Ground Zero, the site where the World Trade Center once stood prior to the terrorist attacks of September eleventh 2001, came in at number eight on the list.
When questioned as to why they made their choices, over half of the voters said that they were impressed by the architecture of the buildings on the list, while 17 per cent said that they had seen the iconic building featured on television and in films.
