New research from Sainsbury's travel insurance has revealed that around 15 per cent of British adults have never taken a holiday abroad. That equates to some 6.96 million over eighteens who have never left the UK.
Many chose to take their holiday within the UK, with caravan parks and holiday resorts such as Butlins and Center Parcs still popular family holiday destinations.
UK residents take in total around 50 million domestic holidays per year, proving that the good old British holiday is not dead. During those domestic holidays, British tourists spend around £10.9 billion.
However, travel manager at Sainsbury's finance warned, do not think that just because you are not leaving the country you do not need travel insurance. Lost or stolen luggage, travel delays and dodgy hotels can all occur within the UK as well as on foreign holidays.
Neil Laird, Travel Insurance Manager at Sainsbury's Finance said: "British people often holiday in the UK, whether it be their main get-away or a short break or long weekend. It can be easy to overlook travel insurance if you are not going on a foreign break but many of the problems that you can encounter abroad can also happen here in the UK on holiday, so it is important to ensure that you have adequate cover."
Sainsbury's say that according to their data, millions of tourists who are taking domestic holidays make claims on their insurance every year, proving that it is just as vital to have travel insurance whether you are holidaying abroad or within the UK.
The most common claims include holidays cancelled for medical reasons, cancellations due to death or illness and claims for lost money, baggage and documents.
And not to forget, internal flights are becoming more and more popular and whenever there is flying involved there is the potential risk of lost baggage, delays and cancellations.
