A travel insurance special on the investigative reporting program Tonight attracted 4 million viewers on ITV1 on 16th of May, reports indicate.
In Holidays Uncovered – Tonight, program presenter, Ginny Buckley, exposed loopholes in some holiday insurance packages, and examined what customers should be wary of when purchasing coverage. The main theme of the program encouraged UK holiday goers to thoroughly research and carefully plan their travel insurance options, rather than grabbing anything they can find at the last second in anticipation of leaving for their travels. The Guardian reported that the special investigative report won a 19% share in the 8pm timeslot.
“Millions of Brits flock to sunny foreign beaches every year,” ITV’s online recap of the program stated. “But, as producer Bob Jefford explains, all too many are enjoy their foreign breaks blissfully unaware that some of their holiday activities are simply not covered by their holiday insurance... But while we spend months and months planning the next getaway, and bagging the best deals; it’s only in the last few days before departure that our afterthoughts turn to travel insurance. Log on quickly, click on the cheapest cover available, and don't give it another thought.”
One sobering story examined in the program was that of a woman who suffered a severe head injury after simply slipping and falling during her holidays in Florida. Because the woman’s physician declared her under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, her insurance provider would not cover the cost of care. As the ITV recap explained, she had consumed the equivalent of four or five pints of beer, and the total cost of her accident and subsequent, tragic death was a quarter of a million dollars.
