The Association of British Travel Agents has described travelling without travel insurance, especially by those on adventure holidays, as an incredibly irresponsible act.
Its press officer, Sean Tipton said those who save money by refusing to take out travel insurance cover could end up selling their homes to foot medical bills, it case of eventuality.
“For anybody going abroad for their holiday or a business trip it is extremely foolish to travel uninsured. If you are going on a holiday which involves greater risk, such as an adventure holiday, or going to do something that is potentially risky without insurance then it is incredibly irresponsible,” he said.
A recent report said the Foreign and Commonwealth Office estimates the cost of treating a broken leg at about £24,000 in the US, while a Greek hospital stay could cost the typical holidaymaker up to £5,000.
Meanwhile, in another report by Defaqto it was found that the cost of travel insurance has dropped to its lowest ever.
It said travel insurance for Britons holidaying in Europe has been dropping since 2003, in spite of inflation.
Author of the report, Brian Brown said that competition in the travel insurance market was having a very significant effect on the price of the cover. He added that the availability of a large number of policies, with online accessibility, has compelled many insurers to lower the premiums.
Single trip policies now cost less than £10 and Mr Brown said there is no excuse for holidaymakers to risk travelling without taking out cover.
