Customers should consider individual insurance for some items when making their travel insurance plans advises the Association of British Insurers.
The issue was raised by ABI spokesperson Malcolm Tarling, who explained that travel insurance could only cover expensive items up to a limited amount.
Mr Tarling added: "It's a question of checking your policy and checking if you have cover for items outside of the home under your household policy."
Checking insurance policies while looking for the best travel insurance has also been shown to be important as the British Insurance Brokers' Association warned that some companies will not cover items checked into the hold.
The advice seems to be that if you are taking anything that is expensive on your holiday then it’s worth checking with your insurer the level of cover you will have if it for it being damaged or lost.
The warning was given after a rise in lost baggage claims last year - an issue which has also recently received media attention after problems with the new Terminal Five at Heathrow Airport.
However, it has also been shown by Sainsbury's Travel Insurance that an estimated ten per cent of people travel without any insurance at all.
