Travellers Lose 200,000 Bags Every Month - 16/04/2008

At least 200,000 bags have in the last two years been lost or misplaced by air travellers each month, a new study has revealed.
In August alone, the research by InsureandGo said, nearly a quarter of a million travellers were affected as they had bags lost or stolen. But in January the least number of loss or misplacement was recorded as about 156,000 passengers faced the problem.
The loss or misplacement of passengers’ luggage has always been in existence as a problem, except that the current Heathrow Terminal 5 chaos magnified it, the insurer said.
Spokesperson of InsureandGo, Perry Wilson said although BAA has come under attack over the loss or delays of bags at T5, people should realise that the problem has been in existence at many airports in recent times.
Some insurers have decided that they would be withdrawing travel insurance coverage for passengers who continue to travel from the chaotic T5.
In another development, backpackers and those wanting to travel abroad for the purpose of study have been urged to adequately prepare by taking out the right travel insurance.
President and chief executive officer of InsureMyTrip.com reminded that travel insurance is a must have for students spending some time abroad as it provides sufficient coverage, especially in terms of healthcare.
There is also a need for parents and students to check the particulars of the health insurance they take out so that they double-check that the policy properly covers them for all eventualities, including medical evacuation.
