Up to 65 per cent of holidaying Brits over the age of 55 do not take out travel insurance reveal figures by a government office.
This is despite the survey by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) showing that 20 per cent of this age group have had physical injuries while on holiday
Further statistics from the FCO show that 80 per cent of this age group do not consult their GP before travelling. Over 10 per cent do not follow safety guidelines they would expect their children to and over 50% consume more alcohol than normal.
Meg Munn, Foreign Office Minister, said: "The Foreign Office is all for over 55s having fun on holiday but it is crucial they make some simple preparation to help avoid encountering difficulties whilst abroad."
Respondents also revealed they like to try new pursuits such as parasailing and bungee- jumping.
Steve Ashton, of Saga Insurance, said: "Regardless of age many people still overlook the essential need to have comprehensive travel insurance cover on place if things do go wrong."
