If you travel abroad on business trips then it’s a good idea to check what cover, if any, that your employer will provide. As always the golden rule about travelling abroad for any reason, whether its business or pleasure, is to check what your policy covers and if in doubt double check you’re your insurer. You may have an accident or be the victim of theft. Larger companies are more likely to provide their own insurance although many do not. Many people on business trips discover to their cost, that their company has not in fact arranged adequate cover, if at all! It’s worth bearing in mind that some insurers may exclude business travel from their policies.
If you are self-employed, it becomes even more important to organise business travel insurance. Larger companies may well agree to help you after an event or claim but as a self-employed person, you are solely responsible for the position in which you find yourself and will personally bear the brunt of the financial loss. The answer is to ensure that you have adequate insurance before your departure. It should only take a few minutes to complete an application form and buying the right policy can save a lot of time and money should you need to make a claim.
