Nationwide: 25 year fixes are in demand - 13/03/2008

Mortgage giant Nationwide has welcomed Alistair Darling's call for cheap 25-year fixed rates to become more widely available.
In his Budget speech yesterday, the chancellor said that the mortgages should be purchased by workers having trouble with buying a home in the current market conditions.
With the average cost of a property in the UK approaching £200,000 - and the average annual income just over £20,000 - mortgage affordability has become an acute concern among many.
Commenting, director of mortgages at Nationwide Matthew Carter said: "We know that a 25 year deal may not appeal to everyone but at the moment it is something our members want us to offer.
"Some customers want the security and peace of mind of a 25 year fixed rate mortgage, knowing that they will be unaffected by fluctuations in rates."
Nationwide is one of the many high street mortgage providers that currently offer 25 year deals as part of their range.
