CML finds 'holistic approach' among householders - 29/02/2008
|
A surprising degree of flux between homeowners and renters has been pointed out by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML).
Figures released by the cancel show that around one in six people who moved into rental accommodation in the 2005/06 period had previously owned their own home and paid a mortgage.
Around ten per cent also owned property that they did not live in.
These buy-to-let mortgage holders often found it difficult to buy property near to their workplace - and therefore bought in a cheaper area in order to get on to the property ladder.
CML economist Paul Samter said: "Given the considerable complexities of modern life and the increasing interactions across the tenures, perhaps it is time for the government to develop a more holistic approach to housing market issues.
"A good starting point would be to focus on policies delivering an adequate supply of high-quality housing, assisting the mobility of households within and between tenures and an equality of treatment for those in need regardless of their tenure."
