Mortgages - Mobiles in cars ban flouted by drivers - 27/11/2007

Thousands of Yorkshire drivers are breaking the law by using their mobile phone handsets while on the road, it has emerged.

Despite toughened-up government guidelines - which has seen a doubling of the fine and the introduction of a three penalty point charge for the offence - over 5,000 motorists have been caught on the phone since February.

Undeterred, local police say that they will continue with the current crackdown, the Yorkshire Post reports.

Driving while on the phone has been proven to make the motorist less aware of his surroundings and to slow reaction times - causing potential injury and car insurance premium boosts.

Speaking to the newspaper, South Yorkshire Police chief inspector Ian Bint said: "There is absolutely no reason for it. The best thing to do is switch your phone off when you get in the vehicle so that you are not tempted to pick it up while driving."

A spokesperson for the force added: "Safe driving requires concentration. Using a phone distracts your attention - you cannot be in full control of your vehicle if you are using a mobile phone while driving."

Mr Bint also told the newspaper that a child had been killed in a recent road accident in the area, caused by the driver's handset use.
