Over the last 10 years, prisoners have received altogether £730,000 worth of student support payments.
John Denham brought this information to attention. The universities secretary made this information public in February, but with a figure of £500,000. It was disclosed yesterday that the actual amount was £730,000.
Prisons recommend prisoners join full time education but it is thought that seeing as the government covers their living costs they should not receive maintenance loans.
Denham hoped that by bringing this information to light education regulations would be changed and in the process bring a stop to what he sees as unjustifiable payments.
Denham wrote to MPs stating that in an assessment by a Student Loans Company, there had been154 prisoners who had received a total of £570,000 in loans and £160,000 of non-repayable maintenance grants.
Most students have to repay their loans once they are earning over £15,000 a year.
