A British woman and her ex-husband have been convicted of life insurance fraud. Ahmad Akhtary, 34, faked his own death. He obtained a fake death certificate that claimed the he died of a brain trauma in Afghanistan.
It is claimed that his ex-wife then filed a claim for a sum in the region of 300,000 that had accumulated from a shared policy that the couple had shared. Their plot was uncovered as they both carried on to live quite normally and in the open in Gloucester. Mr Akhtary had a full time job and continued to pay tax. He also visited a doctor but was linked indefinitely to the fraudulent claim as his fingerprints were found on the fake death certificate.
The wife gave evidence in court under her married name. Both eventually, after at first denying any wrongdoing, confessed to the crime and were sentenced to 9 months in prison and 40 hour un-paid community service.
