Britons can significantly improve their health by walking more, according to life insurance firm Norwich Union.
What's more, with many couch potato Britons making their annual get-fit promises in the New Year, now is the time to add a little extra daily exercise, the life insurance firm said.
Predictably, most fail in their New Year's resolutions - with 71 per cent failing in their January fitness programmes.
However, Norwich Union, in an attempt to change this statistic, has enlisted an exercise expert to give insider fitness tips to customers.
Joanna Hall at Walkactive suggests that people invest in a pedometer - a simple device which calculates how many steps are taken each day.
"For the next four weeks, depending on how fit you are, add 500 or 1,000 steps to your baseline and match that new baseline each day," she suggested.
"This approach gets you fitter gradually and helps you feel in control."
According to a recent Cambridge University study, people who live a healthy lifestyle - exercising and eating well - could add as much as 14 years to their lives.
