Breakthrough Breast Cancer: Patients use complimentary treatments - 25/10/2007
|
A clear majority (60 per cent) of breast cancer patients use complimentary therapies in their fight against the disease, Breakthrough Breast Cancer said today.
Breast cancer is one of the UK's biggest killers - and consequently one of the biggest reasons for life insurance payouts.
The breast cancer group said that the high instances of therapies such as acupuncture being used by the desperate sufferers means that further research into them is "vital".
As a result, Breakthrough recently launched the world's largest clinical trial on the subject, known as ACU.FATIGUE.
Senior research development officer at the group Julie Flynn said: "It's really important to realise that theres little scientific evidence about how [the therapies] may work or how safe they are for patients to use while undergoing conventional treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
"We want to find out whether any complementary therapies are effective in alleviating treatment side-effects and how they may interact."
Generally, Cancer Research UK findings show that around one-third of British cancer patients use complimentary therapies.
The ACU.FATIGUE study will close in 2009.
