Life insurance provider and rural insurance specialists NFU Mutual has issued a stark warning on the dangers facing homeowners in a cold winter.
With flash floods earlier in the year causing over £3 billion-worth of damage according to the Association of British Insurers, the apparently unpredictable weather patterns make the need to undertake home maintenance now rather than later even more pressing.
The life insurance provider advises their rural customers that trees on their land should be looked at, gutters should be cleared and the roof secured.
Any outside lamps and CCTV cameras installed should also be checked, NFU Mutual added.
Laura Wood, speaking on behalf of the life insurance provider, commented: "This years weather has been totally unpredictable - we had severe storms in January, heavy snow in February, followed by a warm and sunny Easter and then rain and floods all summer. What this winter will hold is anyones guess.
"However, sometimes the worst can happen so it is vital that homeowners review their level of buildings and contents cover."
