With nearly one in four adults having serious weight problems Britain is facing an obesity epidemic. Being overweight often leads to health problems and this has now urged insurers to introduce new higher premiums for overweight people who want to buy a life insurance.
Britain's biggest life insurer, Legal & General, said last week that 13 per cent of new applicants face paying the higher premiums.
Russ Whitworth, Legal & General's director of underwriting and claims, said to thisislondon.co.uk, “Most people understand that poor diet and lack of exercise can lead to health problems but they might not realise that being significantly overweight would also make their life insurance more expensive.”
To decide if someone is obese or not the insurers will use the BMI index. A BMI of 30 or more in considered as being overweight.
Fat people will now face to have to pay as much as 50 per cent more for their life insurances than others. Since figures published last week showed that a quarter of all children are overweight before they have stated school the new premiums might even more common sight in the future.
