Cornhill: Fireworks cause increased insurance claims - 25/10/2007

Britons should bear in mind the dangers of fireworks this Guy Fawkes' night, home and life insurance provider Cornhill Direct said today.
In particular, homeowners planning to invite their friends around for a bonfire party were reminded that they could be held legally accountable for any accidents occurring.
Fireworks might also cause a life insurance risk, due to the ever-present possibility of fatal accidents resulting from their dangerous handling.
Simon Coughlin, spokesman for Cornhill Direct, said: "Insurers receive hundreds of claims every year for damage resulting from stray fireworks. Claims include broken windows, damaged roof tiles and fires to property such as fences."
The insurance firm also warned of potential bonfire night-related home insurance wrisks.
"Bonfire night can be a favourite with burglars, who often target homes when there is a large public firework display nearby," Mr Coughlin added.
"Fireworks can easily disguise the noise of windows being broken. Make sure your home is properly secured if you are going to a public display."
Cornhill offers a range of insurance products, including life insurance.
