Insurance - Lock the doors while Santa's around - 22/11/2007

If it's the time of year for a round, jolly-red man named Santa Claus to shimmy down your chimney on December 24th, now is a good time to check your insurance.

Home owners are being encouraged to lock up and take out extra protection while they hide valuable Christmas gifts in their homes.

Direct Line car insurance found that Brits are not securing their goodies this year however as 42 per cent hide all of their presents in one, easy to grab area - the bedroom.

And with burglars knowing that people are buying more gifts this season, people are encouraged to check to make sure they have adequate home insurance to cover their items before they give gifts, and after they receive gifts around New Year's.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, said: "After Christmas and New Year some may find that the value of their household contents has significantly increased in value, so it is worth reassessing home insurance policies to make sure people are not underinsured."
