Almost half of the entire UK population are driving or being driven in cluttered, dirty, potentially dangerous cars, car insurance firm LV= have said.
Just 11 per cent of drivers polled by the car insurance provider admitted to cleaning their vehicles weekly.
Worse, the car insurance company also found evidence that the dirty motors are posing a road risk.
Over half (55 per cent) of drivers asked by the car insurance provider said that they do not check their windscreen was clean before setting off - and 81 per cent do not check their headlights, despite this being required under law.
Women were found to be more slovenly when it came to car checks - with 14 per cent neglecting to perform any at all, compared to 11 per cent of men.
Unsurprisingly, more than one-third of those polled said that they "did not care" about how their cars looked to others.
Emma Holyer, motor spokesperson for LV= commented: "Making sure that your windscreen, lights and mirrors are clean before setting off on a journey should be second nature to motorists, but our research shows that this doesnt appear to be the case despite it being a legal requirement."
