Careless pets 'can cost thousands', Saga says - 05/03/2008

Pet mishaps are potentially so costly that specialist insurance cover is needed, pet insurer Saga has claimed.
According to the provider, 14 per cent of total pet insurance claims are made due to animals suffering from "careless" accidents.
Saga said that costs for treating the accidents can range from £700 to £9,000, depending on the severity of the injuries and type of animal involved.
Common mishaps include pets suffering road accidents, falling out of trees or cutting themselves while trying to squeeze through small gaps.
Additionally, damage to property or possessions caused by these accidents can result in a home insurance claim.
According to Saga, around 71 per cent of UK pet owners have not taken out insurance for their animal.
Region by region, the midlands topped the table for the number of cat injuries suffered - while their canine counterparts in the south-east proved the most accident-prone.
