NHIC: Call your council for asbestos help - 27/02/2008
|
Households concerned about asbestos should always contact their local council for guidance, the National Home Improvement Council (NHIC) has recommended.
Exposure to the mineral - contained in building features such as old insulation lagging - can lead to people contracting deadly lung diseases later in life.
Those undertaking DIY work at home - often funded by a personal loan - might risk disturbing asbestos fibres.
Local authorities, when contacted, can arrange for asbestos checking and removal.
Technical consultant at the NHIC Andrew Leech commented: "Anywhere where a householder is concerned about asbestos, they should consult their local authority and have them come over and assess what the extent of the problem is, and then deal with it accordingly.
"It's not something [the homeowner] should tackle themselves, if they're at all concerned. It has to be disposed of in a certain manner."
Asbestos is the UK's biggest workplace killer, with around 4,000 people dying from an asbestos-related condition each year.
