Aside from car cover, home insurance is the most important kind of protection that can be taken out, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has said.
Despite the importance of buildings and home contents cover, figures cited by the association have shown that one-quarter of Britons have not taken out the insurance.
Figures from the Association of British Insurers also show that property damage or loss of possessions suffered in the UK cost £9 billion in home insurance payments - testifying to the importance of the cover.
Technical and corporate affairs executive of Biba Graeme Trudgill said: "Firstly, if you have a mortgage they'll be a contract between you and the mortgage provider which almost certainly says that you have to take out buildings insurance and if you don't you will be in breach of your mortgage contract.
"It's also important because all your worldly goods and investments are in that property and the contents within it and that is why it is such an important policy to have."
He added: " Home insurance is absolutely the second most important insurance you can buy."
