Met Office warns on upcoming bad weather - 30/01/2008
|
Home insurance claims could be on the rise at the end of the week, a new warning from the Met Office suggests.
According to the office's metreologists, severe gales and heavy rain will be experienced across the nation from Wednesday - with a vicious cold snap to spread from the north on Friday. Up to 10cm of snowfall - enough to cause severe disruption - is also anticipated in many areas towards the weekend.
The severe wind, in particular, can cause significant damage to buildings - necessitating a home insurance claim.
Moreover, the Met Office drew attention yesterday to the potential risk to housebound patients - who face being cut off from others due to the weather.
Patrick Sachon, health forecasting manager, commented: "Working with partners, the Met Office will be contacting over 6,000
patients across the UK, to warn them about the weather conditions and remind them what to do to stay well."
The cold weather follows what has been an unusually mild January - with temperatures well up on the historical average of 3.4 C for the month.
Rainfall amounts have also been high - with provisional figures predicting a 170mm nationwide average, compared to a general January average of 120.5mm.
