Abbey: Bad weather damages one in ten homes - 23/01/2008
|
Around ten per cent of UK homes have suffered weather damage since 2002, a new Abbey study claims.
According to the home insurance provider, there remains significant consumer ignorance regarding the risk - with just 29 per cent of those polled saying that they worry about weather damage.
The average cost of home repairs is around £2,500 - a big incentive for householders to take out home insurance, if they haven't already. Lloyd Wilson, head Of Abbey Home Insurance product development, said: "Bad weather damage is a costly inconvenience and for some people, especially in flood areas, it is becoming a yearly nightmare.
"Our research shows that the risk of damage to our homes is an ever-increasing reality and we need to be prepared for it. - the British weather is highly unpredictable."
The UK has suffered a series of extreme weather events in the past twelve months - with severe weather warnings being issued by the Met Office as recently as last week.
Floods in the south of England in June and July proved the most destructive of these - with a total cost to insurers estimated to be around £3 billion.
