Nationwide reveals buildings insurance uncertainty - 23/01/2008

One in five UK householders do not have buildings home insurance which would cover them for flood damage, home insurance provider Nationwide said today.
A poll conducted by the building society revealed that, along with the 20 per cent who do not have the cover, 25 per cent do not even know what buildings insurance actually protects them from.
Moreover, 14 per cent said that they had not taken out home contents insurance.
Nationwide's insurance director, Robin Bailey, said: "It is surprising that so many people are prepared to take such a gamble on their homes and personal belongings when you consider how much time and money we all invest in our homes.
"You never know what is around the corner and for that reason it is vital that people are prepared by having adequate insurance."
Additionally, Nationwide revealed that 31 per cent of 35 to 44-year-olds do not know what is covered under their buildings home insurance - or even whether they are covered for flood damage at all.
