AA: Home insurance premiums increase - 18/01/2008
|
Home insurance prices are on the up in the UK, the AA said yesterday.
The June and July floods - which caused structural damage to many homes in the south of England - drove up prices by 1.4 per cent on average, the home insurance provider claimed.
Currently, the AA says that the average annual premium stands at £219.
What's more, home contents insurance costs also rose by 0.4 per cent, to hit £151 per year.
Director of insurance relations at the AA John Close commented: "I hope that the government's Climate Change Bill includes robust provisions to ensure that new buildings are more flood and storm resilient, particularly after the renewed flood threats of the past few days."
"Local authorities must also think through where new housing is built: it will help no one if families find their homes are uninsurable because of where they are located."
According to the Association of British Insurers, total flood claims from the June and July deluges could cost the insurance industry £3 billion.
