Halifax: Kitchen fires cost homeowners big - 18/01/2008
|
The kitchen is one of the most dangerous rooms in UK homes, Halifax Home Insurance said today.
According to the home insurance provider, householders should take extra care while using appliances in the kitchen if they want to avoid domestic hazards.
Statistics cited by Halifax show that the 84 kitchen fires reported in the UK each day cost a total of around £280 million a year in damage.
What's more, a big majority (88 per cent) of the fires - which cause around £9,000 of damage each - are caused by appliances being misused.
With this in mind, Halifax said that Britons would do well to avoid copying the TV antics of flashy celebrity chefs too slavishly.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "It's great to see TV stars getting the nation excited about cooking, but we are urging people who do take it up as a hobby to take extra care in the kitchen."
Kitchen fires make up 64 per cent of total accidental domestic fires each year.
