Police crack down on burglars - 02/01/2008
|
Berkshire Police have launched a major operation against 'letterbox buglaries', a spate of which has triggered home insurance claims in the region recently.
The Woodley area of Reading has been particularly affected by the thieves - who use a special device to open door handles from the outside by manoeuvring it through the letterbox.
Once inside, the burglars have stolen many valuable items - leading to home insurance claims.
Speaking to the Reading Chronicle, police officer Jen Banfield said: "We are trying to get across the point that people need to lock their doors from the inside with a key."
She added: "The [area] has a high proportion of UPVC doors which are particularly targeted."
Local police also plan an education drive in the district on the issue - officers will be going door-to-door in Woodley to spread the security message at the end of next week.
